cement works
In the late 1980s Nicolas Gadbois traveled to
numerous petroglyph sites in the American west
photographing and drawing the shapes and patterns
of the ancient artwork. He began making his
first cement paintings in 1990 inspired by
anthropomorphic rock art figures. Later work calls
to mind topography seen from an aerial view and
inscriptions on land. His cement works often feature
patterns that suggests connectivity. Recent paintings
in his 'Site' series draw on satellite imagery of
planetary surfaces and evoke images that are at
once ancient and futuristic.
