In the late 1970s Nicolas apprenticed to learn illustration from his father who was a successful illustrator in Minneapolis. During the 1980s he did illustrations for a large advertising agency in Los Angeles. In addition to his illustration work he created posters for bands. This led to imagery that was more fanciful, colorful and edgy. His work appeared in the magazines Magical Blend, High Times and Quest. In the 1990s he created a new style of offbeat illustrations for John Muir Publications' X Ray Vision series of childrens books. These featured titles such as Looking Inside the Brain, Looking Inside Sunken Treasure, Looking Inside Caves and Looking Inside Telescopes. The books were educational and unique, combining science, learning and fun. Recently Nicolas collaborated with his writer brother Brett creating a series of pen and ink drawings for his book The Cellar Door.
