paintings
The images in Nicolas Gadbois' recent paintings are taken from the continuous stream of roadside spectacle along the freeways and highways of America. The subjects are often overlooked freeway ramps, billboards, power towers, strip malls, satellite dishes, and micowave relays. The paintings address the tension between an expanding industrial culture and the natural world. The works are based on photographs that the artist alters through the technological processes of photocopy reproduction and high contrast solarization. Some of these works reference poster art from the psychedelic era. There is simultaneously a sense of presence and absence that pervades these paintings which are situated somewhere between surrealism and science fiction. His images of industrial totems speak to the proliferation of mass culture, entropy, and an uncertain future.
Nicolas Gadbois is an American Surrealist.
